Background
Lake Jackson, "City of Enchantment", originated in 1941 as a result of the construction of Dow Chemical's Texas Division. Living accommodations were unable to keep up with the fast growth of construction and operations workers at the plants. Because pre-existing towns were not able to develop the additional housing needed, Dow architect Alden B. Dow led the effort to plan and develop Lake Jackson.
The growth of Lake Jackson mirrored the expansion of the Dow Chemical plants, becoming large enough to vote for a Home Rule Charter in 1954 reaching a population figure of 26,386 in the 2000 Census.
