The Holy Meal
The Solemnity of the Most Precious Body and Blood of the Lord gives the Church an opportunity to ponder the wonderful gift of the Eucharist. The readings for today's solemnity have to do with bread, the nourishment necessary for life. Nourishment is necessary for us on many levels, from our physical body to our spiritual life. The food described today sustains not only our flesh, but also the life of Christ within us and the Body of Christ, our Christian community.
Eating together is a sign of sharing life. The food that is shared keeps each person alive and becomes part of each living body. The mystery of Jesus' gift of himself as our food signifies an even greater sharing of life than that of natural food. It is the very life of Jesus that sustains our lives. Sharing Christ' s body and blood makes us one body, the Body of Christ.
In today's first reading, Moses reminded the people of God's tender care for them in the desert and of the importance of remembering that everything they had was a gift from God. In the desert, the people were dependent upon God for everything necessary to sustain life. God provided food and water and guidance for them for forty years.
In the gospel, Jesus, the Word of God made flesh, declared that he was the bread that gives life to the world. Those who eat his flesh and drink his blood will live, not only now but forever. The manna in the desert sustained only physical life and those who ate it eventually died. But the life Jesus promised is life everlasting and those who eat his flesh will live forever.
